California wine has a long and continuing history, and in recent decades has become recognized producing some of the world's finest wine, matching the produce of the classic winemaking regions of France and, in some wine competitions, such as the historic Paris Wine Tasting of 1976, surpassing it. While wine is made in all fifty states, it is California where the great majority (up to 90% by some estimates) is produced. If fact, California would be the fourth largest producer of wine in the world if it were an independent nation.
